About “gunshy”

Stream & Track Info

There’s a version of this song that leans all the way into its trip-hop and Y2K influences, that lets the references do the heavy lifting, winks at the audience, collects its “vibe” points. “gunshy” isn’t interested in being that nostalgia piece. It’s decided that its much too urgent for that.

This is the second single from Genuine Leather’s upcoming EP, a project built on a peculiar constraint: every track traces its DNA back to a single seed, which is a sampled fragment from an iPhone voice memo that blooms outward, each song carrying forward a musical idea from the one before it.

It’s an exercise in finding out what happens when you stop chasing new sparks and instead follow one ember wherever it wants to go.

The production of “gunshy” lives in the in-between: modern but referential, close enough to its influences that you feel them without being able to point and say “ah, that’s just ____.”

It’s somewhere between bedroom auteur and lo-fi minimalist, between finding your way in the dark and iterating a form into something deliberate. Synth bass anchors the low end. Reverbed vocals float above a piano that doesn’t so much play as swaddle, wrapping the whole thing in atmosphere while that splashy, driving beat pushes relentlessly forward.

And then there’s the ask at the center of it all: “Care for me, love me deeper. Cherish me, even the bad stuff, baby.”

It’s a plea dressed up as a demand, or maybe a demand that can’t help but sound like a plea. This person knows they come with rough edges, but they’re not asking for unconditional love. They’re asking for love that’s conditional – on everything, the whole messy picture.

“gunshy” Lyrics

Talk with me
This one's a bleeder
Heavenly, to have my heart
All played around

Search for me
And find the needle
These dogs won't eat
They're always flinching at the sound

Every little thing (gun shy)
Every way
It happens on repeat
Every day

Care for me
Love me deeper
Cherish me
Yes even the bad stuff baby
Every little thing (gun shy)
Every little thing (gun shy)
Every way
It happens on repeat
Every day
I'm living in retreat
So nervous I can't eat

Care for me
Love me deeper
Everything
Care for me
Everything
Yes even the bad shit baby

Getting Used to the Feel” maintains that Tame Impala quality we gushed about last June, but slows its roll and finds Galis’ vocals in a more spacious arrangement, which totally makes sense in the context of its immediate post-COVID ‘return to normalcy’ penning.”  – KUTX Song of the Day

“a Tame-Impala-meets-Toro-Y-Moi wrecking ball of psych-pop… bookended by long-swelling, heavily-modulated synth chords, “Tear It Down” creates a must-hear atmospheric foundation before pulling the rug out and letting loose with some of the slickest pop-rock we’ve heard come out of Austin in a minute.”KUTX

“As the third single from their upcoming EP, ‘“’Tear It Down’ delivers a powerful teaser for what’s to come from Genuine Leather. ” – Plastic Mag

“Promises” is an exciting and infectious single that showcases Genuine Leather’s versatility and willingness to experiment with various sounds.Sistra

“With “Promises”, Chris Galis has crafted a 3-minute dance-pop gem that is guaranteed to get bodies moving. The song highlights Galis’ ability to write captivating and catchy hooks. “Promises” draws inspiration from a range of musical styles, including the classic sounds of Wilco and Tears for Fears, as well as the modern, synth-driven soundscapes of Tame Impala.”Each Measure

“Genuine Leather have definitely made a banger with ‘Even If I Could.'”UptoHear Music

“An 80s pop vibe similar to Thompson Twins is threaded into the chorus, but the stadium friendly alternative tones of the song sit well next to the likes of White Lies, Editors, and CHVRCHES.”Analogue Trash
